The Carnavalet museum commemorates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Marcel Proust (1871-1922).The exhibition is devoted to the relationship between Marcel Proust and the city of Paris, where most of his existence takes place.The first part of the exhibition explores the Parisian universe of the writer. Marcel Proust’s life took place in the heart of a very small space, a quadrilateral stretching from Parc Monceau to Place de la Concorde, from Concorde to Auteuil, from Auteuil to Bois de Boulogne and to Etoile. Thanks to Paris, this brings him a decisive dimension in the awakening of his vocation. In addition, his discovery of artistic and social circles in Paris, the friendships and loves that arise there, strengthen the personality of the writer and lead him to the revelation of his vocation.The second part of the exhibition opens onto the fictional Paris created by Marcel Proust. He first tries to make a career as an art dealer. Refusing to see art as a commodity, he is fired. He then aspires to become a pastor, but he fails the theology exams. At the approach of 1880, he turned to painting. During these years, he left the Netherlands for Belgium, then France to settle there. He then explores painting and drawing both as an autodidact and as a student. However, his life is peppered with crises that reveal his mental instability.
